INSTRUCTIONS

For the first week, we're required to create a game character using vormator shapes.

TASK 1: VORMATOR CHALLENGE

My very rough sketches for the game characters:

fig 1.1; Rough sketch for Vormator Challenge

These are the sketches I have draw for this task. It's a bit challenging as there's some limitations towards the characters we design. I feel like these 3 is fine, and I have also asked a few friends of mine which is better, and they have all said the first one. However, I also liked the 3rd one as it gives me a unique type of feeling. and tried to make them both.

After that, we tried to digitalize it by using Adobe Illustrator:

fig 1.2; Vormator Challenge shapes

The image above is me drawing the shapes using the pen tool. With this, I then tried to create both characters.

fig 1.3; Digitizing Idol Vera;

fig 1.4; Digitizing Server Chiao;

I have tried using gradient on Idol Vera as she is the first character that I have made. For Server Chiao, I only made him using base colors and no gradient at all. However, after making these 2 characters, I have decide to focus more on refining and continuing on Idol Vera.

fig 1.5; Testing out gradients

Fig 1.5 is when I'm trying to test out how the gradients work and how it would look like on my character. The reason why I made it like this was because I want to give it a glowing type of feel so that she would not look so plain. However, I think I do not think that I have done a very good job at this.

Next, we have to create the game card for the character.

fig 1.6; Sketch for game card;

This is my sketch for the game card. I wanted to create a on stage feel where Idol Vera would shine and lots of fans would cheer for her. I  also added the disco ball to make it look like it's a party!

Then I start to move it to Illustrator.

fig 1.7; Moving game card to AI;

I started to move it into AI by tracing it and using the pen tool and shape tool. I also search for a image on Google to use as background.

fig 1.8; Final outcome of Game Card;

This is the final outcome of the front of the game card. I added pink and purple as the background color and have also choose a few typefaces for this. I tried to add a lot of colors to the disco ball at first, but then it looks a bit too much and so I toned it down a little by making it dark white.

fig 1.9; Final outcome of the game card;

This is the final outcome of the back of the game card, I tried to make it look more simpler as the front of the card looked a bit too much so for the back of the card I made it simple and also to match it with the front of the card.

FEEDBACK

Miss said that I should change the color of the disco ball so that it wouldn't look too complicated and lose focal point.

REFLECTIONS

I think this exercise is actually quite fun as this is the first time I create a game character myself. However, I also feel it's really challenging for me as I have to create characters using the shapes given, and thus, I feel like I do not have much of an idea when creating the characters. However, what my lecturers told me had me thinking, they said that we could create the character first without thinking bout the shapes and then only fill the shapes in, because from things that we see like cartoons or comics, their characters are made from shapes at first and only then they slowly refined it, like the cartoon "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends".

Besides that, I also learned the basics of Adobe Illustrator. I have learned how to have more control on the pen tool as well as when I first start, or when I did the Bezier exercise in DPI. I'm also very grateful for my lecturers for guiding me throughout this whole task.
