LECTURES
Topic: Balance & Emphasis
Balance
- Distribution in visual weight.
- The visual equilibrium of elements.
- Can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Symmetrical Balance
- Has equal "weight" on equal sides.
- Around a central point or axis (results in radial balance).
-
Approximate symmetry is when equivalent but not identical forms arranged
around the fulcrum line.

Asymmetrical Balance
- Unequal visual weight on each side of the composition.
-
One side might contain a dominant elements, which could be balance by a
lesser focal points on the other side.
-
Offers more visual variety, however difficult to achieve because elements
are more complex.

The Golden Ratio
- Also known as phi, is a mathematical concept.
-
The ration itself comes from the Fibonacci sequence, a naturally occurring
sequence of numbers that can be found everywhere.
- Perceived as the representative of perfect beauty
- Use as a guide to create visual balance.
- Can be used to bring harmony, structure and balance.

Rule of Thirds
- A composition guideline to create more dynamism.
- Divided evenly into thirds, both horizontally and vertically.
-
The subject is placed at the intersection of those lines, or along the
lines itself.

Emphasis and Dominance
- Used to create dominance and focus.
- Color, shapes, value can be used to achieve dominance.

INSTRUCTIONS
For week 2, we were told to choose 2 principles between Emphasis,
Balance, Repetition and Movement and produce 1 design each, 2 designs
in total.
EXERCISES
I've chosen Repetition and Movement.
Visual Research and Idea Exploration for Repetition:
fig x.x; Repetition design example;
After looking at this picture, I got the idea immediately of a lot of
rooms and decide to go for this type of concept and drew something
like this:

My story for this is how I see the people working right is always
leaving early and return home late at night and they are always
tired. And after that I thought of students are also always doing
either their homework or listening to class. They do not have much
time for themselves as they always rushing to finish their work. I
believe most of us has experience that as most of us do not sleep
much, or play much. I find it very sad as it feels like we're just
spending our life working.

Visual Research and Idea Exploration for Movement design:
I got the idea after looking at the diving activity in the Olympics
and I think they look really cool.
fig x.x; A picture of a diver diving down in the Olympics 2020;

However it was still lacking some movement and so I tried to edit
again:
fig x.x; Final outcome of Movement design;
I tried to make it simple. Instead of making the whole process
of the diver diving into the water, I made it in a way that the
diver is capture exactly at the moment of almost landing in the
water.

FEEDBACK
Mr. Charles said that the repetition design is good because although
it is sort of repeating (the people), but still also have the variety
in it and the repetition in it is obvious.
Regrettably, I did not show Mr. Charles my movement design during
class as I have yet to fully complete it due to some reasons. However,
I did still consult him after class and he said that I could still
explore much with the diver diving down, the motion lines and the
animation sequence of it.
REFLECTIONS
Experience: I personally like Exercise 2, the whole thing feels fun and and I enjoyed it really much. Although my works may not be so great, I still did my best in designing them and I poured a lot of effort into it. The lecture videos as always, is informative and I learned a lot from it and thus I could get on with the exercise much more smoother.
Observations: From my observations, no matter which principle it is, they all have their own importance it, and with it, one could really tell what the art or design is trying to express.
Findings: I found out that the if the principles are used correctly, it can really complement the art itself and made it more attractive.
