LECTURES

Topic: Harmony and Unity

Harmony

  • Becomes monotony without variety.
  • The sense that all of the elements of your design fit together.
  • May fit the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.

Unity
  • Refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout your design to pull the look together. (colors, shapes, materials)
  • Occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness.

Scale and Proportion
  • Design elements that have to do with size.
  • The size of one object in relation to the other objects in a design or artwork.
  • The size of the parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object.
Scale
  • Used to specify or illustrate details based on the relative sizes of objects.
  • Refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure.

Proportion
  • The relationship of two or more elements in a composition and how they compare to one another.
  • Said to be harmonious when a correct relationship exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity.
  • Often results in harmony and unity.

Topic: Symbol, Word and Image

Symbol
  • A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else
  • Symbols can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even a whole story
Symbols can also be divided into:

Pictorial Symbols
  • Image related and simplified pictures

Abstract Symbols
  • Can look like the objects that they represent but have less details.

Arbitrary Symbols
  • Have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent.
  • Invented with the meaning constructed.
  • Many are based on geometric shapes and colors.

Word and Image
  • Able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design.
  • Important to use suitable and relevant images when designing.
  • Right words paired with right images is of high importance as it would deepen the meaning of the design.
  • Suitable typeface and strategic positioning of the type will result in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.

INSTRUCTIONS

For this week's exercise, we are to do 2 designs from Harmony, Unity, Symbol and Word and Image.

EXERCISE

Design 1: Word and Image

Visual Research and Idea Exploration

fig 3.5; Summer solstice graphic design by KIKO; sauce: Red Book

I saw this graphic design on Red Book, I personally really like the idea for this design and the color scheme that the designer KIKO has used. And thus, I'm inspired by it and decide to do a word and image design by combining the reference I got and the song BREATHE by Lee Hi that I think is really good.

fig 3.6; A scene from BREATHE music video;

fig 3.7; Britney's first attempt at word and image design;

I tried to replicate the beach-y feel and inserting the song's lyrics. In this design, I wanna expressed that everyone is their own individual and it's okay to make a mistake. I tried to make it like the owner of the feet is trying to end their life however there's still something holding them back from doing so.

fig 3.8; Final outcome of Word and Image design;

I made some minor changes for this as I do not want to add a lot of stuff and make it look complicated, as the lecturers has always told me, "less is much". And I think the simplicity of the design makes it more clean as well.

Design 2: Harmony

Visual Research and Idea Exploration

fig 4.0; Photography by Tom Grimbert; sauce: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/575334921152180387/

It was actually a rainy day when I got the idea, and there's no one in my house except for my sister and I got the idea after just looking at the rain. The photo above is actually something confirms my idea because I personally have been to a place similar to this during my travel in Thailand. The colorful umbrellas makes it a really beautiful sight. And thus I tried to sketch it out:

fig 4.1; Britney's first attempt at Harmony design;

For this design, I tried to create a sense of loneliness by making him look like the only one who doesn't have his own umbrella. However, I think that I did it wrongly because it lacks the harmony in it.

fig 4.2; Final outcome of Harmony design;

I then tried to further enhance the idea by making a full of color art but left out only the boy uncolored. In this design, I want to expressed that not only does the boy feels the loneliness in the world but he also feels left out, as if he couldn't find the beauty of the world.

FEEDBACK

Dr. Charles has provide me very useful feedbacks and thanks to him, I was able to further improve my designs. For the word and image design, he said that the simplicity of it is nice and it looks quite clean, however, the flow should be smooth instead of being so messy.

For my first attempt at harmony design, he told me that it isn't emphasizing harmony and that something needs to be edit such as the umbrellas, the boy and the bag.

REFLECTIONS

Experience: To be honest, I feel very conflicted at first to choose which design I want to do because I want to try all of them out but at the same time I'm scared as well because I always unsure of the work I do. And although I know that I may not have the talent for things like this, I still tried my best to design what I really want to expressed. And the lecture videos always helped me a lot as well.

Observations: Typography in the word and image is especially important from what I see. In my opinion, by using the right typeface and font, one can express what they want very well.

Findings: I think that all these principles are equally important as they all improve the design even more and could fully explain what the design is about even without using words.
