INSTRUCTIONS
PROJECT
Idea Exploration
About myself:
My name’s Britney, born and raised in Malaysia. I don’t really know how
to really communicate with people, and would always be nervous and
awkward when talking with new people, however, once I get to know them
and them to know me, I start to talk a lot. I do not like people to want
to know me based on my appearance.
What is your passion?
Games. I always play games when I’m in a terrible mood. I like to draw
as well and also aims to be a good artist at that as well. I always
wanted to learn new things and I really love the process of it.
Knitting, drawing, building little things… Adventuring is something I
would like to do.
What’s motivate you to achieve your dream?
My family and friends, and the thought of being able to do something I
really wanted to motivates me. Just imagine not being restricted by the
system and able to do what I really want to, makes me feel happy. My
family and friends are also part of my motivation as sometimes I doubt
myself, about my skills and talents and sometimes, I lose confidence in
myself and thought of giving up. However, I believe that during these
times, my friends would cheer me up. My family also did everything they
could to support me.
How do you want to visualize your dream into an artwork?
I like being in a place where there's not much of unnecessary
restrictions, and I also like learning new things as well. My friends
would often describe me as “天马行空”, or weird to put it simply, and
for that, I decided to do a mix of under the sea and high up in the
sky.
Tell us about your work.
My plan is mainly show the things I like or are interested in, or the
whole feel I like being in. I like being in a large space where
there's no ending to it, and full of fun adventures.
What is the concept behind it?
I don’t really want people to know me by my appearance actually, as
I’m always very shy to seriously expressed myself. That’s why I would
like people to understand myself first. By doing this project, I hope
that people will be interested in my personality.
What is the message you want people to understand it?
“Know my inside before you know my outside” is something I would like
to say, as sometimes people are quick to judge and stereotype
people.
What is your motto/quote?
“Be yourself, love yourself.”

Sketches
fig 1.5; Sketch #1;
For this sketch, basically I'm combining the sea creatures
and the clouds together, besides that, my portrait would be
showing my back only, to show that I would like people to know
me by my "inside" instead. I'm also holding a pen to
show that I wanna live in my own life, a life that I create
myself.
fig 1.6; Sketch #2;
My idea for this is to make myself a giant overlooking the
world, I'm trying to say "My world, my life". I also decide to
make my head an animal for this to show that I'm a "weird"
person, and once again emphasizing on no face.
After sketching and much debating, I decide to go for sketch
#1 as I feel like it could expressed what I want to more.
Then, I went to take a photo of myself.
fig 1.7; Picture of myself;
After taking a few pictures, I think fig 1.7 is one of the
best and I decide to use it.
fig 1.8; Cropping Myself;
First, I use the quick selection tool to crop myself out of
the picture and then refine the edge using the refine edge
brush tool. I then apply layer mask and move it to the
background. I then match the colors of myself and the
background.
I then tried to make the whale brighter and lighter and
also add a bit of glowing to it by using the brush tool to
color its outline and change the blending mode to light
dodge and hard light.
fig 1.11; Adding Jellyfishes;
fig 1.12; Making jellyfishes glowing;
The same goes for the jellyfishes, but I chose vivid
light for blending mode this time.
fig 1.14; Clipping mask;
I then added the fishes to it, however the fishes look
quite dark and it kinda merge in the background, and
thus I adjust the brightness and contrast of the
fishes and then added another image into the fishes by
creating clipping mask.
fig 1.15; Adding clouds;
After that, I cropped out the clouds using the
quick selection tool and move it in here, I
matched the colors but it looks a bit weird and
dark, and so I added a layer of brightness and
contrast to make it brighter.
fig 1.17; Adding clouds at the bottom;
I added the clouds at the bottom so it would
look like I'm inside of it.
fig 1.18; Adding fishes at the bottom;
I also added fishes at the bottom swimming by, I
put difference for the blending mode for this.
After that, I feel like adding a bit of texture
to it.

Animation
I made the whale, clouds fishes move a little
bit.
fig 1.24; Animating sea creatures;
After animating them, I tried to make my
hands move as if I'm drawing it out by using
the puppet tool.

FEEDBACK
Mr. Martin told me what I want to expressed isn't obvious enough.
REFLECTIONS
This is my first time doing this, I'm quite worried the outcome of this as sometimes I feel like I have a lot I want to say and I keep trying to add things into it. However, I do enjoy this project really much. Besides that, I also learned quite a lot of things in After Effects. Overall, it is a really good experience.
