Task 3B: Type Design and Communication
LECTURES
All lectures are completed in Task 1 - Exercise 1 & 2
INSTRUCTIONS
TASK PROGRESSION
We were told to choose a festival and design a sticker for it. For me, I have
chosen Chinese New Year because I really like the festival a lot, and not to
mention, there's a lot of elements that can be used to create a sticker as
well! Thus, I start on my research for it.

fig 1.2; Chinese New Year Line Stickers Sample; sauce: (https://techielobang.com/blog/2016/02/04/line-chinese-new-year-animated-stickers/)
After looking at these, I got some inspiration from it. However, as can
see from fig 1.2, most of the stickers contain a lot of graphical
elements. I then made some sketches for it.
fig 1.3; Sketch #1; (4/11/21)
fig 1.5; Sketch #2; (4/11/21)
fig 1.6; Sketch #3; (4/11/21)
I have made my sketch straight away in Illustrator so I have a
estimate idea of how they would turn out to be. However it isn't
as simple as I think it is. After showing my sketches to Mr.
Vinod, I decided to continue on with my sketch#1 and
sketch#1.5.
I tried to add more things to it as the sketch look lacking. I
also changed the typeface. After that, I then tried to add
colors to it.

Gold and red are colors that can often be seen
during Chinese New Year. I choose them to match the
festival and that it looks quite nice too in my
opinion. I also think that pink actually look nice
too. Chinese New Year is always on spring, and one
of the most commons flowers when mentioned is peach
blossom, and I think a peach-blossom-fan is very
nice as well.

I then send to my friend and test out how it looks
like when converting them into stickers. I was then
told by Mr. Vinod that the shape of the fan look
off, and so I tried to make some amendments.
fig 2.1; After amendments; (18/11/21)
However, the Taylors logo there seems a bit awkward, and there are a lot
of spaces in the frame as well.
fig 2.2; B&W Sticker final look; (18/11/21)
I think that this looks okay, as I feel up the bottom space with
some strings connected to the fan and also added the Chinese
characters of "Happy Chinese New Year". I then tried to test
out the colors on the typeface and the fan.
fig 2.3; Adding colors; (18/11/21)
I think the pink look really nice, however it kind of had a problem
on the top part with the golden words. After much thought, I think
the having the fan red is more suitable.

After that, I then go and animate it. I had encounter quite
some problems when I tried to animate it in After Effects,
and so, I tried to animate it in the way I had before, in
Photoshop with frame animation. I had thought about how the
animation will turn out, as my initial idea was to make the
fan open and the words appear. However, I then thought of
making the words appear at the same time the fan opens. I've
used 6 frames for the animation.

I've tried a long time trying to adjust it so that the
movement of the sticker won't look too obvious, however,
due to my stupidity, I only managed to improve it by
this much.

FEEDBACK
General Feedback:
It is better to do your sketches in a square (512 x 512)px
so that we know how it would look like and how much space
it will take. We should also watch out for the positive
and negative space as it should be balanced. We should
also watch out the colors used when designing the sticker,
avoid using pastel colors and watch out the colors that
contradict each other. We should also not have too much
graphical elements in it as well, we should instead focus
on the typography instead.
Specific feedback:
The use of the fan is nice, but have to make sure that it
is in a square and I should also figure out how to place
it, and maximize the use of space. Sketch 3 does not look
so nice as it should be pasted on the walls, however for
my sketch, it looks a bit weird because it does not look
like it.
The shape of the fan looks off, and try to make it using
shapes instead. I can add more elements to fill up the
space below the fans, perhaps adding little fan or some
Chinese characters. The colors chosen are fine.
REFLECTIONS
Experience: I personally think that this is quite a fun
task as I got to learn a lot of things other than just
designing creatively. I have always wondered how to create my
own stickers, but have never really done so. This task not
only provided me a chance to create my own sticker but also
taught me how to so I could actually create my own stickers
when I have the time to. It was sad that my After Effects
isn't working so well and had to use Photoshop to animate
instead, I was hoping to get to know more about how After
Effects work as it is still a bit new to me. It is also a pity
that this is the last task, as I'm also meeting a lot of other
assignment deadlines, I feel like I could do more if I had
more time.
Observation: As usual, creating a sticker without much
graphical elements still prove to be a very challenging task
for me, however, I observe that with the typeface given to us,
there are actually a lot of typeface that can best describe
some festival such as Happy Birthday and Merry
Christmas.
Findings: I found out that I seriously need to improve
my time managing skills as most of my assignments deadlines
are coming up and I do not have much time to really enjoy and
play around with it. I also found out that I took a lot of
time to do just one assignment and this is something I also
need to improve on as well.

fig 3.6; Type Design and Development
- Text typefaces are expanding to include many weights and widths and are increasingly refined.
- Display typefaces are extending beyond simple forms to experiments in typographic textures and alternate glyphs.
- The internationalization of publications and brands for products and services is redefining our ideas of what is a typeface family.
fig 3.7; The Past as Inspiration
- The divide between display and text typefaces was wide.
- Often designed with clear references to historical forms.
- Long shelf lives
- Few exceptions, usually san serif families such as Univers or Futura.
fig 3.8; Letter, Lines and Paragraphs
- Better to examine typefaces in the context in which we see them on the page.
- Traditional systems categorize typefaces by features such as angle of contrast, rate of modulation and shape of serifs.
- Many letter features distort or become less important to overall impression.
- Typeface design never happens in a vacuum, designer acknowledges the wider historical and cultural environments in which a typefaces sits and respect the users expectations.
