Project 1: Proposal

For the first week, we are to discuss which topic we are gonna choose. As the group leader, I have decided to ask all of us to think of at least 1 topic and we will choose by voting after some explanation of why you choose said topic. Below is our ideas:

After much debate and voting session, we have decided to choose the topic of Wayang Kulit. Then we decided to do a simple research for it before showing our ideas to our supervisor, Ms. Jinchi.

Above is our brief research about the topic and we found out quite a lot of interesting things related to our topic. However, after a brief meeting with our supervisor, we were told to be more specific towards the place of the culture, for example, if we were to choose Indonesia instead of Malaysia, the purpose of it should change. After that we came up with a slight detailed proposal:

After that, we were told to discuss on our preliminary ideas. However, before that, we will have to think of a concept. Our supervisor had suggested to come up with at least 2 concepts. After some discussion, we have came up with about 3 concepts, relevance, preservation and adaption. Then, using the voting method again, we decide to go with preservation and adaption as our concept for the preliminary ideas.

With that, we decided to ask for our supervisor's feedback. Ms. Jinchi told us that our ideas are kinda same with the previous students who did the same topic and thus provided us some suggestion on combining the 2 concepts, and thus, our concept became preservation through adaptation. Then we start to brainstorm for the preliminary ideas:

It was fun having this discussion with our groupmates because I was able to see what they are thinking and what their ideas for it are. Personally, I really liked the creating stickers using Wayang Kulit elements for Telegram and also the drawing book one.

However, after a meeting with our supervisor, we were told that our ideas are all basically the same, and it is all 1 idea. Then she provided us very insightful feedbacks for us to further improve our ideas. She also told us about what should be considered when coming up with the ideas.

FEEDBACK

Ms. Jinchi told us that it is good to have a presentation slide prepare during the first meeting with her. She also told us that we should decide on which kind of Wayang Kulit we should go for, and then decide our target audience. She also complimented us for having our topic related to the theme and that we have some nice examples shown in the presentation slide. She also provided a few suggestions on which aspects that we could focus on, such as the intricate patterns of the puppets, the history of it, the music or the idea of bringing the community together. During our next meeting, she also gave us some advice on how to come up with the concept and that what we need to focus on is the concept instead of the medium. Then for the preliminary ideas part, she told us that we should think of an identity, and that there should be some involvement from the participants so that we can teach the society about the said culture.

REFLECTION

During the first week of the module, I was pretty excited to start the module because we can decide which topic to go for as the subject provides quite some freedom when it comes to choosing the topic. Initially, I was thinking of choosing something related to Japan. However, the Japan culture is quite common nowadays. Then I thought of doing something Thailand related, since I have been there before but do not know much about their culture. Though, I see quite some interesting ideas from my groupmates and in the end, we chose Wayang Kulit. Although all of us have heard of it before, but we do not have much knowledge towards it and thus I think I will be quite interested in the topic as well.

During the first 3 weeks interacting with my teammates, I find them very nice and sweet, they were able to share their ideas openly, and although we have some conflicts, we were still able to solve it without it escalating into an awkward situation. I wish it will the same for the rest of the weeks when we do the rest of our projects.
