PROJECT 3: PRIMARY RESEARCH
Primary Research
In this assignment, we are to brainstorm for the best methods to implement
in our research. There are a lot of research methods. I have chosen 2
methods being survey questionnaire and focus group interview. The below is
my progressions.

FEEDBACKS
WEEK 8
*NO CLASS FOR THIS WEEK DUE TO INDEPENDANT LEARNING WEEK*
WEEK 9
General Feedbacks: One shouldn’t be biased in how you phrase
the questions.
Specific Feedback: There’s quite a lot of open-ended
questions. You can consider interviewing game developers. Game
developers don't mean good gamers, though they have to design something,
so you can interview them for technical support. You can send a message
to them, but it isn’t guaranteed that they will reply. Audio interviews
are usually transcribed, so it is okay if you don’t waste the time to do
that.
WEEK 10
General Feedbacks: It’s important to join the tutorial
sessions. Remember to number the questions.
Specific Feedback: It’s good that you have labeled the
sections. You have to make sure the questions you ask are related to the
questions and are enough for your research, as it is important. In the
demographic section, the age group shouldn’t have a big range, so it
should be 5 years instead, as there are differences in thinking between
them. The area section, people in North America and South America have
different thinking as well, so it should be separated instead. You should
also show appreciation for those participants that didn’t meet the
requirements.
WEEK 11
General Feedbacks: -
Specific Feedback: People who participated in the game
developing and people who participated in testing out the game are
different. Your questions for the focus group interview are
semi-structured interview questions as you are asking other questions
than the list according to the dynamics of the interview. It would be
great if you can get people from the other side of the world as they
have different thinking and would thus provide a different perspective
of opinions.
WEEK 12
General Feedbacks: -
Specific Feedback: You can try and self evaluate the methods
used.
REFLECTIONS
WEEK 8
In this week, we are to start our primary research. This part usually
makes me feel sad because I do not have a lot of friends to help me
with this. Even if I do, most of them do not have the same interest as
me regarding this topic. Sometimes, I find it hard to search for
participants to distribute the survey to. Aside from that, I think
that doing a survey, while having its cons, is actually quite
convenient in gathering public opinions and stuff. It is sad that I
may not be able to gather a large sample, but I think I will just do
what I can do first.
WEEK 9
At first, I planned to do an email interview with experts of the
field, however, I couldn’t find their emails anywhere and thus unable
to contact them. I started out as really excited when planning for
this, but things just don’t go that smooth for me. Although, I still
haven’t given up on trying to interview the experts. I think that if I
still won't be able to make any progress in week 10, I will just give
up…
WEEK 10
In this week, I have already started on the questionnaire so that I
could distribute the questionnaire and have more time to collect the
data. Since I have another method to collect the desired data, I need to
manage my time wisely as well considering I have other assignments and
tasks to do. After letting my lecturer check my questionnaire, I started
to have some afterthoughts. I think that perhaps my questionnaire looks
too messy, and the questions are pretty jumpy as well, so I decide to
organize the whole section and what my purpose for that part is. And I’m
quite relieved that I did that, because I was able to rethink the
questions I ask, and also added even more questions to further help me
with my research. This is done after the consultation I have with my
lecturer, and I feel extremely guilty to have to disturb her through
Telegram, but I thought I couldn’t waste another week just to have her
approval as time is really tight for me as mentioned before. With that,
I decided to send my lecturer the edited questionnaire with a short
description on what I have already changed and or add. Luckily, my
lecturer replied to me within that day, and I’m very grateful for that,
so I straight away distributed it to all the social media or other
platforms I planned to use. I think that this part of the assignment is
actually pretty fun, as I was pretty excited to see people’s opinions
and thoughts about my topic.
WEEK 11
At the same time when I was conducting my method 1, which is a survey
questionnaire, I was also conducting my second method, which is focus
group interview. This part is much more difficult compared to the first
method as I have looked continuously for more participants, but either
the people that I looked for are too busy, or did not see my messages
that I have sent. I feel quite dejected about this, nonetheless, I still
went ahead and interviewed the participants I had first. The interview
took longer than I expected as they had to think about how to exactly
answer the questions, what the questions meant. I’m also very grateful
to them due to how they spent so much time with the interview and also
provided honest opinions and thoughts to it.
WEEK 12
In this week, I’m basically analyzing the data collected and also
continuing to interview the participants. Analyzing the data definitely
took a lot more time than what I have anticipated, due to how many
questions I have asked and also I have reorganized the open-ended
questions and more. In the middle of this, I have found quite a lot of
faults in my questionnaire and also, I found out that I did not account
for all the disadvantages for the method as well, because there are a
few participants that did not provide serious answers. Regardless, I
still managed to compile them and analyze them to the best of my
abilities. For the second part, which is the focus group interview, I
found out that it is also quite hard for me to interview due to how some
of them are from different countries, and I have to choose a suitable
time for them. Luckily, those don’t prove to be too big of a problem, as
I myself am someone who doesn’t sleep early. That aside, I was quite
disappointed to see that one of the participants had decided that she
did not have the time to spare for the interview after she accepted my
request to interview her. And due to how last minute it is, I have no
choice but to decide that my participants for the focus group became
from 6 to 5. That’s what I have worried a lot about when I was thinking
about conducting this method. I am quite worried that either the
participants would think that the interview is too boring and just left
halfway, or renege on their word.
