  • Definition:
Empathy is the ability to fully understand, mirror, then share another person's expressions, needs, and motivations. In UX, empathy enables us to understand not only our users' immediate frustrations, but also their hopes, fears, abilities, limitations, reasoning, and goals.

PROGRESSION

Task 1: Bad vs Good UX Design

Fig 1.4; Case Study on Good and Bad UX Design; (13/4/23)

After the lecture, we're required to be in a group of four and after we grouped up, we start discussing on our part of the exercise. Our topic for this exercise is to analyze and identify the good and bad UX design of a public transportation system. Below is our work:

Final Project: Wayfinding System

In this project, we are required to design a wayfinding system for Taylor's University's Vortex Lab. There's two section for this project, group and individual. First of all, we need to obtain some information regarding the Vortex Lab from people inside the campus (staff or non-staff).

After that, we have to organize the information we got based on the way that our lecturer taught us.

After this activity, our lecturer thought that we are ready to interview our client, whom is the XR specialist of the Vortex Lab. Before that, our group think that it would be best if we could first draft our questions out so that we know what to do and have a clearer thinking of what to ask.

After that, we proceeded with the interview with Mr. Faizal. While our group feel nervous about it, I think it went pretty well and my groupmates are pretty supportive of me.

With that, we then proceed with our individual work, which is to design a wayfinding system for the Vortex Lab.

Visual Research and Idea Exploration

Fig 2.1; Reference and Mood board; (6/6/2023)

Above is my reference and mood board of my idea on the project. I thought of an AR application that could navigate users to wherever they want to go. The reason why I thought of this is because I rely on navigation heavily whenever I'm in a place where I'm unfamiliar with. Furthermore, I often use Google Maps and or Waze as well. Thus, I thought of creating something maybe similar to Google Maps, but yet, much more interesting.

Moreover, Vortex Lab is a lab about extended reality, and I thought I could somehow related something of the lab to my idea, which is where the augmented reality comes in, however, I then thought just a simple AR navigating app is pretty boring. So I thought of adding some gaming elements into it as well, because I like playing games, so why not. With that brief idea, I then started to do more research on the idea.

Fig 2.2; Very rough sketches; (7/6/2023)

After some time of finding and searching, I decide to draft out my rough ideas. The mascot of the Vortex Lab basically look like a cute little android, I thought since the project is related to Vortex Lab, I might as well use their mascot to help lead visitors to the lab.

The main idea of my wayfinding system is basically combining augmented reality and gaming into navigating. The process of my idea is, users are able to access the navigation by scanning a sticker that is commonly placed on the school grounds. The purpose of the sticker is to determined the location of the users in the campus and from there, the app will navigate them to the Vortex Lab. The mascot of the app will interact with the users on the way, similar to the popular game Pokemon Go. For users who doesn't want the gaming elements, they can switch it off.

Digitizing

Fig 2.2; Digitizing Ideas; (9/6/2023)

Above are my digitized ideas. I added some shading and shadow for the mascot to make it look more 3D and also designed a sticker for the school grounds.

Survey Questionnaire

After that, we need to create a questionnaire and send it to people to see if whether our ideas work.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 10

Specific Feedback: Ms. Dini gets my idea and she thought that it's interesting, however, she recommends me to refine my design so as to not look like it's just a sketch. Furthermore, she also commented that I need to add a section in my questionnaire basically asking respondents on what they know about Vortex Lab.

WEEK 11

Specific Feedback: Great job, Britney! I have reviewed your study questions and would like to provide you with some feedback. Here are my thoughts: Firstly, you need to specify that your target audience is students to avoid any confusion. Your questions have the potential to trick both staff and students at Taylor's University. Therefore, it would be helpful to make it clear that the target audience for your study is specifically students at Taylor's University. Moving forward, you can proceed with distributing your questionnaires to a broader audience. Overall, your questions are well-crafted and show great promise. Keep up the good work!

WEEK 12

Specific Feedback: The font for the sticker does not match the theme with everything and it doesn't look illegible. The app itself looks okay, however would better to add some text overlays and or some pop ups. Would be nice to have some animations. This idea doesn't have to be a short-term thing, doesn't have to specifically aim for newcomers or for the target to use only a few times. How do you make it sustainable? You can refined the gaming elements. There's potential in your idea, though more could improve in it. The 3rd picture pathway looks different from the others too, you should change that.

REFLECTION

At first, I thought that this class will be tough for me even though it's just an extension, and considering that I have other heavy modules, I have thought of dropping this module. However, I feel very lucky that I did not drop the module as I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the class, it's really chill and I really could feel the "happy learning environment" in our class.

Aside from that, I really have really learned a lot in this module. I felt that  UX is very commonly seen now in the world, and learning it is very crucial in my life, especially when I'm in work. I have learnt the ways of researching and interviewing. Furthermore, I also obtained knowledge of what aspects to look out for when doing UX design. I think that this class is quite important, even though it may just be an extension.

I also feel a little unfortunate since I couldn't get to know the whole class. Since we're just a small class, I think some of us could get along well after some time. But I think that could be for another day. Overall, I think I really quite like the class as the learning environment is very comfortable, and workload isn't as hard compared to other modules. Furthermore, I really like the way our lecturer, Ms. Dini doesn't give us work outside of class, as that really helps us a lot in our own time managing.
