Task 2: Art Assets & Game Prototype
INSTRUCTIONS
PROGRESSION
From the previous project, I have already decided on how my game should go.
Basically, Raki the raccoon needs to save the villagers that are lost. With
that said, I start to design my art assets. Due to how Raki is a member of a
magic guild, I decided to give him a mysterious feel to the character. Below
is my art assets progression.
Fig 1.1; First Attempt;
This is the first attempt at designing my main character, however, I feel
that the shape of the head seem a bit too cat-like.
Fig 1.2; Second and third Attempt;
Second attempt seem a bit weird but after much amendments on the details,
third attempt look much better. The wings behind Raki are initially just
design, however, I thought that it would look like that the character will
be flying instead. Furthermore, with much consideration on the animation
for walking, jumping and more, I also decided to change how the legs will
look.
Fig 1.3; Final Attempt of main character design;
After finish designing the main style of the main character, I then
proceed to do the side profiles and animations of my main character.
This part really isn't my strength, and thus I spend a looooooot of time
trying to complete it. Below is my progression.
Fig 1.5; Player Idle;
After finish designing the main character, I then moved to design the
enemies. Although I at first planned to have 2 enemies and 1 boss, I
unfortunately sucked at time managing and thus only made 1 enemy and 1
boss.
Fig 2.0; BoneShriek Jester (Normal Enemy);
This is my normal enemy. I called it BoneShriek Jester due to the design
looking skeleton-like and clown-ish.
Fig 2.1; ShadowBane (Boss);
This is how my boss enemy looks like. I tried to give it "blood-flow through its veins" look. Due to how short the time it is that I could fully explore on the world and story building, I couldn't really make it look very good (this is also due to my skills as well). Though, I think it looks not bad, so I decided to go with this.
Then I also proceed to do my level design as well as my ground, background, item assets design. These are shown below:

Next, after finishing design the art assets, I then proceed to the coding part of the project. I first make the basics of the game, which is to code out the character movements. Below is all my coding progression for my game prototype (for future learning purposes).

After that, I start to make it so that when enemies touched players, players would die, and also other dying parts. I have yet to implement health logic in the game.

REFLECTION
In this project, I felt quite overwhelmed as I have been faced with a lot of parts that really isn't my strength. I knew that character design and animation making is hard, however, it wasn't until I personally experienced it that I realized how incredibly challenging it is. I found myself often stuck when making the animations especially. Even after much searching on how exactly I need to make the animations, I still doubt whether what I'm doing is right. In this designing part, Pinterest, Behance and other websites saved me a lot as they provided me a lot of ideas on how I should go with designing my characters. The process of designing and animating is undoubtedly hard, nonetheless, I'm still able to complete it. The coding part was also a challenging part as it's also something that I haven't really had much experience in. Though I must say, the coding part is actually fun as I get to really really use my brain (not that designing doesn't need brain) to think of a solution on how to proceed with the things I want to do and also when my codes have errors. The previous exercises that we have done in class helped me a lot. So I would to say that surprisingly, I would prefer coding more than designing the assets, hahaha. Overall speaking, it's actually a very fun and interesting process for project 2.
