INSTRUCTIONS
PROJECT
Project 2A: Photo Manipulation
After doing the Shazam exercise, it is time to put ourselves into the
Hearst Mansion. First, we need to take a photo of ourselves. Then we need
to put ourselves into the Hearst Mansion after we cropped ourselves out
using the quick selection tool.
fig 1.1; Me inside Hearst Mansion;
After putting myself in, I resized the image to match the background and
not to look like I'm to large or small.
fig 1.2; Matching Colors;
Then I start to match the colors to make it seem like I was really
there.
fig 1.3; Adding Shadows and Gaussian Blur;
Next, I added the shadows using the brush tool and also added the
gaussian blur under the filter tab.
fig 1.4; Adding reflections;
To make it seem more realistic, I added my reflection to it as
well by copying my image layer and flip it vertically. I cropped
it out with the pen tool and Paths.

Project 2A: Recoloring B&W Photo
For this part of the project, we're required to recolor the B&W
photo that are provided by the lecturers.
fig 2.1; B&W Image;
This is the B&W image I've chosen.
Since I have chosen a Asian, I've decide to go look for Asian skin
tones and got the above reference images. Next, I start preparing
the colors by color picking them.
fig 2.5; Recoloring the hair;
First, we create a mask for the hair by using the quick
selection tool, then refine the edge by clicking select and
mask under the properties tab and using the Refine Edge Brush
Tool. For her hair color, I choose soft light for the blending
mode to give her a dyed brown hair feeling.
fig 2.6; Recoloring the skin;
The rest of the steps are about the same. For her skin, I
chose overlay as the blending mode.
fig 2.7; Recoloring the lips;
For her lips, I chose overlay as the blending mode.
This looks a bit more natural.
fig 2.8; Recoloring the eyes;
For her eyes, I chose darken as the blending mode. The
color I gave for her eyes is dark blue, this is to make
her eyes look like they have more light to it but not
too much as to ruin it.
fig 2.9; Recoloring the shirt;
For her shirt, I chose soft light as the blending mode.
fig 2.10; Recoloring the background;
For the background, I chose multiply as the blending
mode.

Project 2B: Conceptual Poster Design
Research
To be really honest, I was a COVID19 patient before, and though it did affect
me physically, it isn't anything compare to affecting me mentally. During the
time when I was a COVID19 patient, it was very hard for me to get through it.
My father's symptoms is very serious, and since no one in our house is a
doctor, or have any knowledge regarding this, we do not know what to do
exactly. We've talked to a doctor that we have never met before, we knew him
by my uncle's recommendations, and after much discussion, he gave us medicine.
However, my father's condition isn't improving, in fact, it's getting worse
and worse by the day. In the end, we sent him to a hospital. And although, it
may seem nothing, but during that time, we had tons of problems we have to
face, and everyday feel like years. It was tough. And one might think that
physical and mental health are not really related, I think otherwise. One's
mental health can definitely cause a huge impact on your physical health when
trying to recover. That is why, one should always look out for their mental
health.
Summary of Articles
Article 1: The impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of adolescents and
youth
According to the articles and the survey they have conducted, 27% of the
people felt anxiety and 15% of the people have depression, the main reason
that make them feel this way is the economic situation during that time.
Majority of the people also stated that they were having lesser and lesser
motivation to do activities they usually enjoyed, or do regular chores. Not to
mentioned, their perception of the future has also been negatively affected.
Majority of them that are facing a lot of problems have felt the need to ask
for help, but despite this, most of them did not ask for help.
Article 2: The impact of Covid-19 on young people with mental health
needs
The pandemic has a serious impact on a lot of the young people. Some of them
feel deeply anxious and have started to self-harm again, some of them are
having more panic attacks, and some are losing motivation and hope for the
future. Their main pressures during the lockdown are loneliness and isolation,
concerns about school, college or university work and a breakdown in routine.
Many young people also spoke of fears about the future, and although some were
optimistic, other were concerned that easing restrictions too soon could lead
to further restrictions in the future.
The posters that I found on Pinterest that I'm interested in:
I like this poster as it has a dark theme around it, obviously to signify
the bad things that come from cyber-bullying. I also liked how the message
was conveyed without too much explanation using words.
From the first look, some people would find this poster looking quite cute,
as the turtle looks a bit cute. However, this poster actually brings me a
sense of uneasiness. Try to imagine ourselves getting choke by straws
because some people do not know how to recycle. I also liked this poster
because although I do not understand the language used in here, I can still
understand what the poster is trying to say.
fig 3.3; Food wasting poster; sauce:(

For this poster, I like the typography design for the word "FULL". It has
only a bit of graphical element to it, but was able to 'fully' expressed
the meaning of it. (haha xD). I also like how the word "are empty" only
took up a bit of the spaces for the stomach.
fig 3.4; Mental health poster ; sauce:
For this poster, I quite like the design for the pointer, the designer
designed the pointer like a human but one can only tell after looking at it
long enough. I also liked the typography design for some of the words here,
the designer uses different typefaces for words like "Help", "Empty".
fig 3.5: Drug Poster; sauce:
I like this poster for how the designer has decide to put words together to
make a syringe. And just this much, one can tell this is a poster about drug
trafficking.
fig 3.6: Anti-circus Poster; sauce:
This poster is quite interesting as well. The first thing I see is the
elephant getting chained and still performing as the spotlight is shooting
down at it. Then the words the designer chose is something that attracts me
as well.
Sketching
After doing researches, I have an idea on what to do. Basically, I want to
focus on people who felt lonely and isolated during the pandemic, as even if
we could go out and play, one still needs to watch out for social distancing
and stuff like that. I also wanted to tell people that if you need help,
please tell someone who could help instead of bottling it up Below is my
layout sketches.

fig 3.12; Final Look after debating.
Above is my first design for the poster, I'm not the best at typography,
and thus the words does not look cool or meaningful like I wanted it to.
However, I feel like this doesn't fully expressed what I want to. With
that, I tried to modify it.
First of all, I desaturated the background color, so that the top right
part wouldn't look so weird.
fig 3.13; Desaturating the background image;
After desaturated it, I tried to again match the man's color to the
background color.
fig 3.14; Creating a virus;
At first, I planned to create a virus image by gathering words just like
in fig 3.5, however, I think it looks kinda complicated and scraped that
idea away and settle with just the outline.
fig 3.15; Creating a virus 2;
fig 3.16; Putting the virus and creating the bars;
After creating the virus, I then tried to make the bars. Since I
can't find the perfect bars image for this, I tried to make it by
using the quick selection tool to crop it out. After that, I added
some color balance to it.
fig 3.17; Adding color balance;
Then I added the words.

FEEDBACK
Mr. Martin told me the idea was great, however the typography for it was too complicated.
REFLECTIONS
My first digitally done poster. And to be really honest, I think I didn't do a great job on it. I tried to search for the right typeface for it, but still find myself choosing this. However, I feel quite happy at the same time as I was able to learn a lot of things from this. Whenever I'm stuck on something and do not know how to continue, I just search the internet for inspiration and tutorials, by then when I finish, I felt a sense of accomplishment. I think this project is quite good, as not only do we understand more against the said issue, but we also do something in our way to raise awareness about it as well. Not to mention, during the time I do this project, I also learn a lot of features of the apps.
