Project 1: Instructable Poster

For this project, we are to choose a video of Pasta Granny and watch it, then make a poster for it. After browsing the channel, I have decided to go for Anna's fusilli with spicy tomato sauce.

fig 1.1; Anna's fusilli with spicy tomato sauce; sauce: (https://youtu.be/dOUfBW8mpX0)

After watching it a few times, I have recorded down the ingredients used and the steps to make it:

Ingredients for sauce
  • 500g of tomatoes
  • 400ML of tomato passata
  • A teaspoon of blackpepper
Added richness to the sauce
  • Pork skin rolls
  • 2 teaspoons of grated pecorino cheese
  • Dried mint
  • Sliced garlic
  • Black pepper
  • Sliced chili
For pasta
  • 400g of semolina flour
  • An egg
  • Water
How to cook the sauce
  1. Chops onions into the pan
  2. Adds olive oil
  3. Adds 500g of tomatoes into the pan
  4. Fry them into a chunky sauce
  5. Add tomato passata
  6. Adds a teaspoon of black pepper to the pan
  7. For added richness, prepare pork skin rolls
  8. Sprinkles 2 teaspoons of grated pecorino cheese onto it
  9. Adds dried mint
  10. Adds a bit of sliced garlic
  11. Adds black pepper
  12. Adds sliced chili
  13.  Roll and tied them up with strings, puts them into the pot to simmer for at least an hour
How to cook fusilli
  1. 400g of semolina flour and makes a “well”,
  2. scramble an egg and pour into the well while adding water
  3. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes
  4. Rolls out a thick pasta sting, snipping it off a 12cm
  5. Use a metal rod that’s uneven and square and pulls it along at a slight angle on the pasta to twist it so that it won’t stick together, the trick is to not press too hard.
  6. Boil the fusilli in the salted water for about 5 to 10 minutes (taste to check)
  7. Add the sauce to the pasta after it’s done and tons of pecorino cheese.
After breaking down the info, I start to look for some reference for the poster:

fig 1.3; How to make Cider Apple Pie; sauce: (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/904801381358496003/)

fig 1.5; How to make butterbeer; sauce: (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1618549858526708/)

I was inspired by these reference because they made it look so pretty and easy and I thought maybe I could do the same as well, however I know my skills are limited. Even so, I still make some sketches for which elements will be used when I make the poster:

fig 1.6; Very rough sketches for ingredients;

fig 1.7; Very rough sketches for ingredients 2;

However, after drawing the sketches, I then realized that some of these may not fit with the poster I had in mind. However, I decide to move it into Illustrator only then to change some of the things I have drew.

fig 1.8; Illustrating the Elements;

After moving it into Illustrator, I found out that I have a lot that looks very weird, and thus I decide to redraw some. I found that I lacked a lot of elements and stuff as well so I also redraw them.

fig 1.9; Background of the poster;

After Illustrating the elements, I start to make the poster by creating the background first.

fig 2.0; Title typography;

I tried to experiment with several typefaces, however I think the look kinda weird. In the end, I decide to go with this one, Blenda Script.

fig 2.1; Spicy typography;

For the word "spicy" I decide to add something else for it. And I decide to use the font of Char BB for it and duplicate it and change it to green and lower down the opacity so it would look like a real chili. Personally, I like it, so I decide to keep it.

fig 2.2; Arranging the poster;

I start by doing the sauce first, since it contains more ingredients and stuff. The typeface used here is Nexa.

fig 2.3; Arranging the poster 2;

The same goes for the pasta part.

fig 2.4; Pasta;

For the serving of the pasta, I decide to use this and add the steam to make it feel like fresh pasta.

REFLECTION

In this project, I was quite excited at the start of the project, I have tons of ideas on how to do it and stuff. However, due to my lack of skills, I can only do this much. At some point, I feel dissatisfied with my pasta and I feel like changing it, but I do not know where to start or how to change it. In the end, I decided to go with this. I know it is far from perfect, and aesthetically speaking, it is not so good as well, however, I feel like this is better compare to the other I have did. There are a lot of times where I feel quite frustrated at it since I couldn't do what I want to, and thus I decide to improve myself on this since infographic posters and stuff are quite common these days and it is equally important as well.
